Colors & Patterns

York Hill Pottery's handmade Vermont stoneware is available in three nature-inspired product lines: “Elements,”  “Hand Painted,” and "Volutes." Colors and patterns within each line appeal to a wide variety of tastes, ranging from the antique look of Etruscan Green to the light delicacy of Wildflowers Blue.

Hand Painted Pottery Line

Each piece of pottery in our flagship line is hand-thrown on the wheel by Elizabeth and hand-painted by Susan, whose fine mastery of Oriental brushes lends the Dragon Fly, Ginkgo, and Wildflowers patterns their elegant flair.

New Elements Pottery Line

Our new Elements line features Elizabeth’s distinctive technique of applying slip (watered-down clay) to a still-damp pot and rhythmically dragging her fingers along the exterior while the pottery wheel is in motion. By skillfully balancing the forces of wheel speed and finger pressure, she is able to create a spontaneous, fluid pattern reminiscent of clouds, waves, and other organic shapes.

Volutes Pottery Line

Volutes are the spiral, scroll-shaped ornaments forming the chief feature of ionic columns; they also refer to the turn of a spiral-shaped shell. Our Volutes line includes one-of-a-kind bowls, vases, urns, and lamps—with spiral shapes individually hand-formed by Susan, and then added to each pot. The glaze used in this pottery line features a matte finish that varies considerably from pot to pot, and gives the pieces an ancient look.
